I reckon the best thing is deciding what it is that I want to study. I was able to choose my own research topic that interested me, and I don’t have to follow what somebody else wants me to do. That to me is an ideal job!
The hardest part is kind of the same thing really… as I don’t have to answer or report to anybody, it can be hard to keep yourself motivated and not just play about on the internet all day!

Oh, and the possibility I will find something new out about the world, that we didn’t know before, and that might help people… thats pretty cool

Hi Spacenut, that’s a toughie! I like a lot of things about my job, it’s flexibility, the fact that I can steer my own research in a direction I want to, but if pushed I really enjoy working 1-2-1 with athletes and sometimes use the work that I’m publishing to help them perform better and enjoy their sport more. You kind of think that what you’re doing is a little bit worthwhile. The hardest part for me is keeping all the plates spinning! Lecturing, marking, researching, supervising students, among other activities…all takes time and sometimes it doesn’t seem like there are enough hours in the day!
