Ok, I don’t want a lawsuit taking out against me, ok? Lucozade Sport works!! More seriously, and again, this isn’t my area of expertise, but there’s a good deal of evidence to say that drinks that contain carbohydrate (essentially sugars) can enhance performance in sports events that rely on this energy source for activity (e.g., endurance running or cycling). Its less likely to be effective in a 100m sprint for example. What science teaches you is that there can be lots of “ifs, buts, or maybes”, what I would term caveats. For example, the % of carbohydrate relative to the volume of fluid, the time at which its consumed (immediately before or during performance), how much fluid, (an athlete may not want a litre swilling around in their belly!) and the environment in which it’s examined (e.g., laboratory or “proper competition”) may all influence how successful it is. Hope that helps!
