Hi cheese2000! Great question! When the moon was first formed millions of years ago, it settled into orbit around the earth. If it had gone any faster, it would have been catapulted out into space, and if it had gone any slower, it would have been pulled towards the earth and crashed into it. So the reason we have a moon is because it happened to be going at the right speed so that it could stay in orbit around us.
