That’s a good question! There is something called the ‘Mohs hardness scale’, which measures the scratch resistance of lots of different types of minerals – basically how easy or hard they are to damage. On that scale, the softest substance is talc (otherwise known as hydrated magnesium silicate), and the hardest is usually considered to be diamond. However, scientists have recently found some materials that are much harder than diamond – some of them are man-made, but one natural (and rare!) one is called wurtzite boron nitride, and is thought to be 58% harder than diamond!
