• Question: What has been your most funnest experience of being a Scientist about the Olympics?

      Hi dmcclorey142! Aside from looking forward to watching the Olympics (and of course getting to take part in I’m a Scientist: In the zone!), I’ve got the chance to interview Dr Jat Sandhu, one of the Directors of Public Health for Vancouver, in Canada. He was in charge of looking after public health during the Winter Olympics two years ago, so I’m really looking forward to asking him what sorts of challenges London might face this summer, and how they might be different to those that Vancouver faced.       Hi dmcclorey142. My funniest experience of being a scientist about the Olympics? Hmm…that’s a great question. Whilst we want our athletes to have an amazing time at the Olympics and soak up all of the wonderful atmosphere that will be on offer, it is quite a serious time for them. Many of them will have been working all of their lives to go to an Olympic games and to have it in their home country is a huge deal! So most of the time that I talk to potential Olympic athletes, we talk about quite serious issues that may help or hinder their performance at the games. So I guess what I’m trying to say is that I don’t have one stand out “funny moment” but that may all change once the games actually get here. Lots of our athletes are still trying to qualify for the Olympics so it’s a tense time for lots of them…I’m sure that once the games are over there will be lots and lots of funny moments to look back on! If I think of anything in the meantime, I’ll let you know 🙂

      Similar to Faye, there’s been so funny moments as such but it’s been such a buzz being a Scientist with the Olympics and Paralympics fast approaching. I’ve been lucky enough to interview Olympic champions as part of my research and it’s been great to hear such inspirational stories coz even though I’m not a elite athlete myself, the lessons I have learnt that I’ve tried to apply to my work have been amazing.
