      Hi,

My research looks at the tibial component of total knee replacements, so one of the 3 parts that make up a knee replacement. I’m trying to figure out what effect the current designs (materials and shapes etc) of this part have on the forces in the bone surrounding it when it is implanted into the human body. So for example if I find that it massively increases the forces going through the bone then I can say that its a bad thing as the bone is likely to break.

From this I will then try and use the info to design a new component myself, that would aim to improve the effect of the forces in the bone in comparison to the current designs.

In the long term this would plan to increase the life of knee replacements so that they last longer for the patient before they need further operations.

Hope this is as interesting to you as it is to me ;-)!

      Sam
