We have certain type of neurons in our brain called mirror neurons, which help us to mimic other people’s behaviour. This is important in babies, because it helps them to form bonds with the adults that look after them. For example, if a mum smiles at her baby, if the baby smiles back, the mum will find it rewarding and want to look after the baby more. Copying what other people do is also a really good way of learning how to do something yourself, so it’s all part of the growing and development process!
