      Hi @charlieroyle,

      The answer to this is very similar to the question about blindness. Deafness can be developed from birth due to genetic mutations or developed when we are older due to a trauma or disease which effects the ear, most notably the nerve cells that detect sound waves, or the portion of the brain which interprets sound.
