My research uses human volunteers and samples from humans and I don’t do any research on animals. But lots of research, both in my department and in the scientific world generally, involves animals. Many of the drugs and treatments that people rely on today to live healthy and or improved lives wouldn’t be available without the use of animal testing. There are very strict laws on how animals should be kept and used in research so that the animals have as good a life as possible and I think this is really important.

At the moment, I still don’t really want to do research involving animals but that’s a very personal thing and it doesnt mean that I think it is wrong at all.

If there are alternatives to animal testing then these should be used. I absolutely disagree with the use of animal testing for purely cosmetic purposes when alternatives are available. But in science animals are used because there is no other way to carry out the research and the research is very important.
